WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A man who escaped during a traffic stop in Wake Forest stabbed a woman and attempted to steal her vehicle on Monday afternoon, according to police.

The man was stopped while driving at the Market Shopping Center on Capital Boulevard. He left the traffic stop on foot, officials said.

Less than an hour later, police responded to a report that a woman had been stabbed on the 600 block of Durham Road.

Shirley Johnson helped after the woman ran up to her door.

"We just heard somebody screaming, 'help me, he stabbed me,'" Johnson said.

Johnson was inside her Wake Forest home when she heard the cries for help right on her doorstep.

"By the time I got to the door and I saw her, it was all the blood on her legs and it was crazy," Johnson said.

Johnson called 911 and other neighbors rushed to help.

"I’ve never heard anybody like that, the way she was screaming for help," Johnson said.

Officials believe that she was stabbed by the same man who fled from the police and that he tried to steal her vehicle.

The woman who was stabbed was transported to a local hospital. As of Monday evening, her condition was unknown.

"I just pray she’s OK and nobody else got hurt or whatever," Johnson said. "I just hope they find him."

The man is considered armed and dangerous. Police urge people in the area to lock their doors and call 911 if they "see anything suspicious."
