FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police officers found a loaded AK-47 under a 2-year-old's bed during a search of a Fayetteville home on Monday.

Officers responding to a Crime Stoppers tip were able to corroborate the tipster's information and obtained a warrant to search a home in the 300 block of Suzanne Street, police said.

Inside the home, they found nearly a pound of marijuana and various drug paraphernalia in addition to the AK-47, police said.

Sergio F. Weeks, 32, and Alysha J. Smith, 25, were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony maintaining a dwelling for narcotic use, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and child abuse. Weeks also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Both have since been released on bond.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted with the investigation, police said.

The tipster will be eligible for a cash reward from Fayetteville/Cumberland County Crime Stoppers for the information he or she provided to police.

Gunshots were the second-leading cause of death among children and adolescents ages 1 to 19 in the U.S. in 2016, according to a recent study.
