Police investigating shooting in neighborhood close to UNC campus

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred overnight in a Chapel Hill neighborhood.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Police are investigating a shooting that occurred overnight in a Chapel Hill apartment complex.

The shooting occurred before 3 a.m. at the Glen Lennox Apartments on Maxwell Road, one mile from campus. At the scene, WRAL News saw a man in an ambulance, but the extent of his injuries was unknown.

Police at the scene counted at least 15 shell casings on the ground and more bullet holes in a car parked along the street.

Jake Richard, a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student who lives down the street, said he didn't hear shots and a shooting is unusual for the neighborhood, which is a mix of families and students.

"It's crazy obviously ... you don't ever expect that to happen in your neighborhood," Richard said. "I'm glad everyone is okay, but I'm just hoping nothing like that keeps happening around here. It's scary."

Police at the scene said there is no threat to the public.

The cause of the shooting was not released.
