FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Fuquay-Varina police are investigating after officials said an off-duty Cary police officer shot and killed a dog after it attacked the officer's sister and her dog.

In a post on its Facebook page, police said they responded to a call close to 7 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 1700 block of McLaurin Lane in Fuquay-Varina. The officers found the off-duty Cary officer, who was not named, had shot a pit bull mix dog after he said it attacked his sister and her dog on his private property. The dog was running at large and off its owner's property, officials said.

Officials said the dog ran into the Cary officer's yard and attacked his sister and dog, resulting in injuries to both. The officer said he heard his sister screaming, saw the neighbor's dog actively biting his sister and her leashed dog and ran to her aid. He then fired his gun and killed the dog.

The woman and her dog then received medical treatment.

Fuquay-Varina police contacted Wake County Animal Control to aid in an investigation. The Cary Police Department was also notified.

Fuquay-Varina listed this animal ordinance at the end of its Facebook post:

"Town Ordinance 8-11003 Animals running at large, public nuisance states, 'It shall be unlawful for any animal to run at-large off its owner's real property or premises within the Town of Fuquay-Varina corporate limits. Any animal not on the real property or premises of the owner's residence shall be required to be restrained by the owner using a leash and maintaining control of the animal while off the real property or premises of the owner.'"
