Police identify man accused of shooting at police officers

Deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said that two men on Sunday shot at Albemarle police officers, disabling their patrol car, as they were fleeing the scene of a drive-by shooting.

Deputies said the men fled on foot in a wooded area south of N.C. Highway 24, about three miles west of Carthage.

Authorities were able to recover a shotgun and AK-47 they believe were used by the suspects, but a search for the men was discontinued Monday morning after bloodhounds lost the scent of them, indicating they may have been picked up by a car.

Albemarle police on Tuesday said they have identified Jeremiah Devon McDougald, of 79 Pinehollow Drive in Broadway, as one of the suspects. Warrants were obtained McDougald for attempted first-degree murder, felony possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of discharging a weapon in an occupied moving vehicle, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.

McDougald was not in custody Tuesday night and anybody with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Albemarle police at 704-984-9500.

Members of the public are advised against approaching McDougald if they see him, as he is considered armed and dangerous.
