CARY, N.C. — School administrators have responded after a student assaulted a teacher last week at Green Hope High School.

GHHS principal Alison Cleveland sent a letter to parents explaining the situation on Thursday afternoon. The teacher was hurt, but has since returned to school.

The details of the assault were not revealed. Cary police said the student involved is 15 years old. Police didn't release information on whether or not the student was arrested.

"I wanted to take a moment to address a situation that affected our school community last week," the principal's letter began. "On Thursday, September 8, a student assaulted a teacher who was supervising SMART lunch. The teacher was injured, but is recovering and has returned to school."

The assault occurred in the school gym. Video shows the student punching the teacher in the face before the teacher falls to the floor.

Cleveland said the student's behavior was "unacceptable and does not align with the high standards we hold for all of our Green Hope Falcons." She did not mention what disciplinary action was taken against the student.

"We appreciate the heartfelt support students, staff and parents alike have shown for the teacher involved. Your kindness and concern are a reflection of the values we embrace and celebrate in our Green Hope High School community."
