CLAYTON, N.C. — A fire at a Clayton day care under construction on Monday was set intentionally, Clayton police said Tuesday.

The blaze was reported at Building Blocks Childcare, located at 55 Hawkesburg Drive near the 3100 block of Vinson Road, just before 4 a.m.

No one was hurt.

Specific information was withheld due to the ongoing criminal investigation, Police Chief Glen Allen said.

Anyone who may have seen any suspicious vehicles or people in the area from 1 to 5 a.m. Monday, or have any information about the fire, should call Clayton police at 919-553-4611 or Clayton Crime Stoppers at 919-359-TIPZ (8479).

A reward is available for confidential information that leads to an arrest.

The day care fire was the latest in a string of blazes in the area since October.

About four homes under construction have been set on fire in recent months and Powhatan Elementary School, across the street from the day care, suffered a rash of vandalism in January and February. A school bus there also caught fire.
