FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 14-year-old girl who told Fayetteville police that she was raped last week on her way home from the library made the story up, police said Thursday.

The teen said she left the Main Headquarters Library last Thursday night and was walking through Linear Park when a man grabbed her, pulled her into some bushes and raped her, police said. The girl said the man fled in the direction of Mason Street and she ran back to the library to call for help.

Investigators have determined that the alleged attack never occurred, police said. There was no word on whether the girl would be charged with filing a false report.

Four other rapes have been reported in Fayetteville since June 3. A man has been charged in one, but the other three remain unsolved.
