ENFIELD, N.C. — An Enfield man who crashed his car in a supermarket parking lot and died Tuesday evening was shot shortly before the crash, police said Friday.

Chester Lee Banks Jr., 20, lost control of his car on U.S. Highway 301, and the vehicle went into a ditch and then crashed outside the Just Save Grocery at about 6:45 p.m., Enfield Police Chief Eddie Buffaloe said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Khiry Dickens, 19, of 2588 Beaver Dam Road, and charged him with first-degree murder in the shooting. He was being held in the Halifax County jail without bond.

Authorities said they believe the two men were fighting and that Banks drove off after Dickens shot him on Hannon Road.
