DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police were searching Tuesday for a man who allegedly held up an athletic apparel store at a busy strip shopping center by threatening to infect workers with HIV from a medical syringe he was holding, investigators said.

Officers were called to the New Balance store, located in the Renaissance Center at 6901 Fayetteville Road, Monday evening shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Store employees told police that a worker saw the man putting store merchandise in a bag and confronted the suspect.

The employee asked the suspect if he was going to pay for the items, when he then pulled out a syringe and told employees he would give them HIV if they tried to stop him.

The man fled from the store with an unspecified amount of merchandise.

No one was hurt during the incident, police said.

Anyone with information about the suspect was asked to call Durham police.
