BENSON, N.C. — Police were investigating an unusual hit-and-run in Benson on Friday.

A vehicle drove around crossing gates and onto railroad tracks at Main Street at about 2 a.m. and was hit by an Amtrak train, police said.

The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage, but was able to drive off, police said. Officers tracked a trail of debris and leaking coolant and found the abandoned vehicle in a field near N.C. Highway 27 and Hodges Chapel Road.

The vehicle was impounded, and charges are pending against the driver, police said, calling the incident a hit-and-run.

No injuries were reported, and the train, traveling from New York to Miami, resumed service.
