WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A man crashed on Capital Boulevard in Wake Forest on Saturday night after firing a gun out of his car window, police said.

Witnesses told police the man slowed down in the northbound lanes north of Burlington Mills Road, and then they heard at least one shot.

"We just witnessed an accident on Capital Boulevard, right in the middle, but just prior to the accident, the driver was shooting out the window," a woman told a 911 dispatcher.

"Do you know what he was shooting at?" the dispatcher asked.

"Just in the air. He was, like, holding up traffic really bad and just shot out the window in the air. I was like maybe 2 cars behind him," the caller responded.

The driver, later identified by police as Rashaud Tyrell Watson, 20, of 4202 Caplan Drive in Raleigh, then ran off the road and hit a tree.

Police said it's not clear why he fired the shot, or what caused the crash.

Watson was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh with non-life-threatening injuries.

Arrest warrants have been issued charging him with three counts each of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm and one count of discharging a firearm in the city limits. The warrants will be served once Watson’s condition improves, police said.
