Chief Estella Patterson on Friday will update Raleigh City Council about a rise in some violent crimes.

In 2022, the city of Raleigh recorded its highest number of homicides in a single year since the FBI started keeping records nearly three decades ago.

The update at 11:15 a.m. comes as Raleigh sees an uptick in homicides. Patterson reported 49 homicides last year in Raleigh compared to 33 the year prior.

Among the shootings was the deadly mass shooting in east Raleigh's Hedingham neighborhood, which was carried out by a teenager.

The police chief has said youth violence is a growing concern and will likely discuss the issue on Friday.

Patterson has already asked community groups and nonprofits to consider partnering with the Raleigh Police Department to provide gun awareness and anger management training to youth.
