Police chief responds to multiple shootings overnight in Raleigh

Raleigh, N.C. — Multiple shootings were reported Saturday night throughout Raleigh.
The first shooting happened by the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Police said a man with non-life-threatening injuries walked into a local hospital after in the 4700 block of Hillsborough Street, near North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Then, a shooting was reported on St. Augustine University's campus at Falkcrest Apartments, just after 11:30 p.m.
Officials said two men got into an argument and shot each other. The men were not affiliated with the school, according to a statement from university officials. The men received non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting, according to police.
Falkcrest Apartments is co-ed apartment style living for rising sophomores, upperclassmen and presidential scholars.
Finally, Raleigh police officers were shot at by a suspect when they arrived at Grove Avenue to search for a homicide suspect. Police said as officers got out of their car, they were shot at.
No one was injured in the shooting, and one person was taken into custody after the incident.
"We are grateful that none of the incidents resulted in a loss of life, but I do realize that these types of events not only affect the victims but the greater community as well," said Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson.
Patterson called on the community to work hand in hand with Raleigh police to help solve the shootings.
"I want to emphasize that my desire is to make Raleigh the safest city in the country but we as a police department cannot do it alone," said Patterson. "It is vital that the community and the police department work hand in hand to solve these types of crimes and to help prevent them from happening in the future."
