HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A man in a stolen dump truck lead state troopers, police and deputies on a chase in Orange County Saturday night.

After receiving a call about a stolen dump truck at 8:27 p.m., deputies spotted the 1987 tandem-axle International dump truck along U.S. Highway 70 West in Hillsborough.

Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, Walter Lorenzo Williams, 40, of Orange County, refused to pull over.

Williams lead officers on a nearly 15-mile chase along U.S. 70, Walnut Grove Church Road and N.C. Highway 86 North. Three Orange County Sheriff's Office vehicles, two Highway Patrol units and two Hillsborough police officers were involved in the pursuit, which stayed at relatively low speeds.

Officers halted Williams at the site of the original theft along N.C. 86 North around 8:50 p.m. Williams ran from the vehicle and was immediately apprehended.

The dump truck was returned its owner undamaged.

Williams is being held at the Orange County jail, and charges against him are pending.

The Highway Patrol is looking into the vehicle chase, and the Orange County Sheriff's Office is investigating the vehicle theft.
