CARY, N.C. — A Cary man faces charges that he smoked marijuana around his young children and kept swords within their reach, police said Wednesday.

David A. Ringenberg, 23, of 1229 Pond St., was charged Tuesday with misdemeanor child abuse, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Capt. Mike Williams, with the Cary Police Department, said that officers investigating a break-in in the area noticed a bike at Ringenberg's house.

Officers found that Ringenberg was smoking pot around his 2- and 4-year-old daughters and had swords and razors "in close proximity" to them, Williams said. He said police also found 11 glass pipes, a grinder and scale.

Ringenberg was placed in the Wake County jail under a $2,000 bond.

His daughters were placed with a family member, Williams said.

Ringenberg has a single previous misdemeanor conviction for possession of drug paraphernalia, according to state Department of Correction records.
