CLINTON, N.C. — Clinton police are investigating after a man was shot outside an apartment building Tuesday afternoon.

Officers with the Clinton Police Department and Sampson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Eastover Terrace Apartments at about 2:40 p.m. and found an unresponsive man lying outside.

First responders performed CPR on the man, identified as Jihad Vaughn, 24, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they believe the shooting was the result of an argument at the apartment complex that ended in gunfire. No weapon was found at the scene.

Police said witnesses reported that a suspect fled from the scene in a red car.

A person of interest has been identified in the case, but that person’s name was being withheld, police said.
