"He and a friend grabbed their masks and he said, 'Mom, I'm going trick-or-treating,'" said Noel Hill, Lawton's mother.
Lawton's mom said he went out trick-or-treating with two other friends on Monday near the River Birch at Town Center apartment complex off Old Wake Forest Road. Around 9:54 p.m., she said, police asked her to come to the end of her neighborhood where they told her that her son had been taken to WakeMed. Lawton died at the hospital of his injuries.
"Halloween is never going to be the same again," Hill said.
Hill said Lawton went trick-or-treating with three friends, two of whom were also shot. She said the other two boys who were hospitalized are expected to survive.
Investigators remained at the scene Tuesday almost 12 hours after Lawton and two others were shot and taken to the hospital.
