Intense transitional planning is underway as Fort Bragg will officially change its name to Fort Liberty later this year.

Fort Bragg will be re-designated Fort Liberty on June 2.

Television video cameras were not allowed in Tuesday morning's round-table discussion about Fort Bragg becoming Fort Liberty. However, top leadership was eager to share some of the highlights of how that change will take place.

Part of the change is reminding the community that no active duty personnel gave input into the new name. Fort Bragg's Commander says the name was selected during conversations with civilian community leaders.

"One of the defining moments of that conversation, as they tried to figure out, what's the one word to represent everything? The people, the families, the civilians, the veterans of this area have done," said Lt. General Chris Donahue. "It was Liberty."

The Fort Bragg Renaming Commission received more than 3,400 submissions for names.

Streets, buildings and businesses on the post will have their names changed. The Fort Bragg Renaming Commission estimates it will cost more than $6.3 million to rename Fort Bragg.

The plan also calls for the creation of a memorial area that tells the history of Fort Bragg soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.

"The sunset liberty march, every night, will honor someone who gave their life from this installation, somewhere in the world, doing exactly what we all aspire to do," Donahue said.

The Sunset Liberty March will be about a half-mile long and open to veterans, including any Gold Star Family Members and service members active or reserved.

The march of honor starts June 1 and will happen every day at sunset, every day of the year.

Donahue said the renaming to Fort Liberty does not apply to streets, buildings and businesses located off the post.
