PITTSBORO, N.C. — A Pittsboro woman has been accused of stealing more than $13,000 from an elderly relative, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Shekethia Renee Edwards, 47, of 4408 Old Graham Road, was charged with felonious exploitation of an elder adult.

Maj. Gary Blakenship said that the Chatham County Department of Social Services informed the sheriff's office that a large amount of money had been taken from a client's checking account without permission. Investigators determined that Edwards had taken the money to pay off a car loan, Blakenship said.

Edwards was given a $5,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 22.
