Pitt County authorities arrested a man on Thursday who they believe sexually assaulted a child "over a period of time," according to the sheriff's office.

<b>STOKES, N.C.</b> — Pitt County authorities arrested a man on Thursday who they believe sexually assaulted a child "over a period of time," according to the sheriff's office.

Alejandro Gomez Garcia, 42, of 2827 Briery Swamp Road in Stokes, faces charges of first-degree sexual offense involving a child, indecent liberties with a child and first-degree kidnapping.

Authorities withheld details of the case to protect the victim's identity.

Garcia was placed in the Pitt County jail under a $500,000 secured bond.
