Pinehurst mayor passes away

Pinehurst Mayor George P. Lane died on Tuesday at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, according to the city’s Web site. Lane had recently undergone surgery after he fell at his home on Feb. 15.

PINEHURST, N.C. — Pinehurst Mayor George P. Lane died on Tuesday at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, according to the city’s Web site. Lane had recently undergone surgery after he fell at his home on Feb. 15.

The New York-native was elected mayor in 2007.

Raised in Freeport, Long Island, Lane attended Adelphi University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He later received a master’s degree in educational administration from Hofstra University

After working as a teacher, coach and director of athletics on Long Island, he moved to Massachusetts, where he earned a doctorate at the University of Massachusetts.

Lane moved to Pinehurst in 1990.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Mayor Pro Tem Virginia F. Fallon is temporarily assuming the responsibilities of mayor.
