Pilot from Apex dies in eastern NC plane crash

Onslow County, N.C. — One of two people killed in a plane crash in eastern North Carolina lived in Wake County.
The pilot, William Roberts of Apex, owned the small plane that went down in a wooded area near the Holly Ridge -Topsail Island Airport in Onslow County on Thursday night. The Federal Aviation Administration said that a single-engine Mooney M20J crashed around 5 p.m.
Roberts and passenger Willie Hobbs, Jr. died. Two children were hurt.
Federal investigators arrived on the scene on Friday afternoon.
Witnesses said the plane didn't get enough lift on takeoff.
