Population data from the U.S. Census Bureau last week show the Charlotte and Raleigh areas are likely to receive more representation in the state House and Senate beginning with the 2012 elections.
The suburban counties next to Mecklenburg and Wake counties that have become bedroom communities to the state's two largest cities will also get more lawmakers. Rural areas in the mountains and the east will likely see representation erode because their growth hasn't kept up.
GOP leaders want to complete maps for the Legislature and North Carolina's congressional districts by May 15.
