DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham pie shop has closed its doors.
The Pie Hole opened in September at 810 Ninth St. on the ground floor of the 810 residential building. It was the Los Angeles' based company's first U.S. location outside of California. The franchise has five locations in the LA-area and two in Tokyo.

"On Monday, we made the hardest decision that we’ve ever made. One that also affected so many that we loved. We’ve been struggling for months to ensure that our awesome employees are taken care of and that our lights remained on...but it’s gotten to a point where it was no longer feasible," owners Surelyne and Young Lee wrote on social media Wednesday.

After meeting with advisors, the couple decided to close the restaurant for good on Monday.

"This was devastating to us as we poured our hearts, souls and finances into our business. Making quality pies from scratch is not an easy process nor is it an inexpensive one. There’s nothing like the look on our customers faces when they place that first bite of our amazing pies into their mouths. Kudos to our absolutely wonderful Chef Chris Herbert and her team of bakers. We all thrived on the feedback and love we’ve had from customers who appreciated the quality and craftsmanship that went into each pie."

The Pie Hole's menu rotated seasonally and included a mix of classic and unique pies.
