There are still plenty of strawberries out there for the picking — or the picking up — at local strawberry farms. The local season in the Triangle can run through about the first week of June.

Farms likely will be busy with strawberry fans during this long Memorial Day weekend. And while all of them require ample social distancing and other procedures to limit the transmission of the coronavirus, many may still be leery of getting out and about with others on a busy weekend.

That's why I wanted to give a shout out to farms like Buckwheat Farm in Apex that allow for curbside pickup of its delicious berries. All you have to do is order what you want from its online store and drive over to the farm. An employee will walk your order to your car and stick it in the trunk.

Our experience last week at Buckwheat was fantastic. And the strawberries were absolutely delicious — sweet, juicy berries that were perfect on their own or with some homemade strawberry shortcake.

One important note: Based on their policies or what they have in stock, these farms may require you to place your curbside order before you go to ensure they have enough berries to go around. This past week's wet weather has made the fields a bit soggy too.

So it's always best to check ahead to make sure they'll have berries for you — in the fields, at the register or curbside — once you get there.
