RALEIGH, N.C. — Approximately 500 people participated in the Santa Paws 5K run Sunday morning at Dorothea Dix Park.

The 5K was put on by the SPCA of Wake County to benefit animals and help give them a better life.

From teacup Chihuahuas to German shepherds and huskies, there were all kinds of dogs running with their owners and cheering on other dogs from the sides.

Pet owners coordinated outfits with their pets to cheer on the runners and participate in the run themselves.

WRAL's Gerald Owens volunteered for the event.

"This is my sixth or seventh year volunteering for this. I think it's fun and is important for us to support organizations that try to find homes for homeless animals. As someone who has had many, many shelter pets, it's something that I feel really strongly about," Owens said.

"My favorite part for me is looking at all the costumes. Not only the animals, but the owners that bring the animals here and how they coordinate with each other, it's really cool to see," he said.

Over 50 volunteers came out to help the event run smoothly and show support for the SPCA.
