DURHAM, N.C. — One person was shot in a Costco parking lot Saturday afternoon in Durham, police said.

Authorities said a man in his 20s was shot at the store in the 1500 block of North Pointe Drive just after 1:30 p.m.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries that could be life-threatening, police said.

A Duke University spokesperson confirmed the victim was a graduate student at the school.

“The Duke Divinity School community is deeply saddened and troubled by the shooting of one of our students. We have been surrounding the victim and his family with love, support and prayers throughout the weekend, and we will continue to do so in the coming days," Duke Divinity School Dean L. Gregory Jones said Monday in a statement.

Police did not say what led to the shooting or release any information about possible suspects.

Mike Solle said he was on the way to the Costco when he saw a breaking news alert about the shooting on his phone. He said the incident made him fearful to go to the store where he frequently shops.

"I was going to go shopping, but I waited a little while after the alert. I figured I'd let things calm down," he said. "I hope whoever got shot is OK. I saw that they were in really serious condition, and I hop they catch whoever shot the person and we can do some things to make [violence] less common around here."

Anybody with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
