Suspect charged in fatal shooting at Carrboro apartment

A Carrboro man has been charged in a shooting early Friday that left one person dead and a second seriously wounded, police said.

CARRBORO, N.C. — A Carrboro man has been charged in a shooting early Friday that left one person dead and a second seriously wounded, police said.

The shooting occurred at about 2:30 a.m. at the Berkshire 54 Apartment Homes, off N.C. Highway 54.

Police released no details about the shooting, other than confirming one person was dead and a second was taken to UNC Hospitals, in Chapel Hill, with what appeared to be life-threatening wounds.

Brandon Lee Freeman, 27, who lives at the complex, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill infliciting serious injury. He was being held without bond in the Orange County jail.

Fatal shootings are unusual in Carrboro, according to Police Chief Christopher Atack, who said there was no ongoing threat to the community. He asked anyone with information to call the Carrboro Police Department at 919-918-7412.
