Person Jumps to Escape Apartment Fire

The Red Cross was assisting six people were displaced by an early morning fire at a Durham apartment complex.

DURHAM, N.C. — A person jumped from a second-floor window to escape a fire at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Wabash Street Saturday morning.

The fire broke out around 3:15 a.m., and firefighters encountered heavy smoke throughout the building when they arrived. Crews had the blaze controlled and began to clear the scene by 4:40 a.m.

Firefighters climbed ladders to rescue two people from the upper floor.

Officials said two people, including the person who jumped, were taken to be treated at a local hospital.

Six people were displaced by the fire, and the Red Cross was helping them find housing.

The fire was contained to the first-floor apartment in the back of the building, where it started. There was no word yet on the extent of the damage.

Fire officials are working to determine the cause of the fire.
