ROXBORO, N.C. — Officials said a Person County inmate who they said walked away from a work farm in Roxboro was captured Thursday night.

Roxboro Police said Steven Orlando Barrett Jr. was taken into custody Thursday evening around 8 p.m. without incident at 111 Person Court. He will face charges for his escape, officials said.

Officials said he was last seen in the vicinity of the closed Person County Prison, which is used as a satellite classroom. He was taking an electrical wiring class when officials said he walked away around 3:05 p.m. Thursday.

Officials said he was admitted to prison on Dec. 7, 2017, to serve a four-year, four-month prison term for convictions in Guilford County for failing to register as a sex offender and taking indecent liberties with a child. He was released on post-release supervision in June 2018, but returned to prison this past May for violating the terms of his release. Before his escape, his projected release date was Dec. 10, 2020.
