RALEIGH, N.C. — The State Fair is a staple to the Triangle and people across North Carolina. Although it’s been canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, vendors are still providing a few fair favorites.

There are no rides, no exhibits and the crowds aren't around. But the food still is, and people arrived to the fairgrounds on Thursday to get a taste of what they're missing.

“I kind of like this better because we’re actually always here only for the food, and there are food trucks, so it’s perfect for us," said Chapel Hill resident Sarmuna Wei. "And we don’t really like the rides because we have to wait in long line and we’re not patient people."

People couldn’t resist getting their yearly fill of their favorite fair foods.

“It’s the fried Oreos," said Warren Mays, of Wake Forest. "We’ve already found that spot and hook it up before we go.”

“The corn and the Italian sausage and had some lemonade," Raleigh resident Kiajah Braxton said of what was sampled.

“The turkey leg is always our favorite. We only came for that and saw some other goodies," Wei said.

If you missed out Thursday, food vendors will be on site near Dorton Arena every day through Oct 25. from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Face coverings are required, and all of the food is to-go only. You'll also want to bring cash as most vendors don't accept credit cards.

“It’s been a family tradition with my family for the past 64 years we’ve been here," vendor Ryan Jenks said. We’re tickled to be here.”

The fair may look different from years past but people said the food was helping make 2020 a little more palatable.

“It makes me feel good," Mays said. "It’s nice that we can come out as a family and just enjoy this tonight.”
