Pedestrian struck, killed on I-40, prompting hours-long closure near US 70

A Raleigh man was struck Tuesday night in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near U.S. Highway 70, prompting authorities to close the westbound lanes while they investigated the incident.

GARNER, N.C. — A Raleigh man was struck and killed Tuesday night while walking in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near U.S. Highway 70, prompting authorities to close the westbound lanes while they investigated the incident.

Derron Torris Stephens was on the hood of a vehicle on I-40 that then ran over him, authorities said, calling the incident a hit-and-run.

It wasn't immediately clear why Stephens was on the car hood.

The scene after a pedestrian was struck and killed in the westbound lanes of I-40 Tuesday night near U.S. Highway 70.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. near Mile Marker 306 and just before the exit for U.S. 70.

The lanes were closed until around 2 a.m.
