Pedestrian struck, killed in Fayetteville; suspected driver flees scene

Fayetteville Police said a pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday, and the suspect who hit the person fled the scene.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville Police said a pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday, and the suspect who hit the person fled the scene.

Officials said the incident happened at around 8:17 p.m. along the 6800 block of Buttermere Drive. Police investigating the accident said a 2009 BMW 328i was traveling east on Buttermere Drive when the driver ran off the road and struck a pedestrian before overturning in the front yard of a residence.

Following the crash, the driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot, police said.

Joel Camacho Ortiz, 33, of the 6900 block of Wickersham Dr., was pronounced dead after being transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Officers with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit were on scene conducting the investigation. Buttermere Drive was closed on the 6800 block. Motorists were encouraged to use an alternate route until the scene was cleared.
