Pedestrian struck, killed in Clayton

Clayton police said a pedestrian was struck and killed while trying to cross U.S. Highway 70 Friday night.

CLAYTON, N.C. — Clayton police said a pedestrian was struck and killed while trying to cross U.S. Highway 70 Friday night.

Lt. Drew Medlin confirmed the crash happened just before 8 p.m. Officials said the man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that struck the man remained at the site of the crash, WRAL's Rosalia Fodera reported.

Eastbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 70 were closed and an investigation was underway Friday night. Officers remained on the scene collecting evidence.
