DURHAM, N.C. — A pedestrian was serious injured early Wednesday in a crash in a Durham neighborhood.

The crash occurred at 7 a.m. on Morreene Road near Tremont Drive.

Karen Bethea, 55, attempted to cross the street and stepped into the path of a northbound 2019 Toyota Avalon, according to investigators.

Bethea was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota wasn't injured.

Police said it was still dark when the crash occurred and that speed and alcohol didn't appear to be factors in the crash.

Morreene Road was closed between Tremont Drive and Forest Oaks Drive for approximately three hours.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Investigator Justin Rose with the Durham Police Department's Traffic and Crash Team at 919-475-4149.
