WEST END, N.C. — A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle and killed Friday morning in front of a Moore County elementary school, authorities said.

According to authorities, 23-year-old Steven Markel McGregor, of 525 Love Grove Church Road, was hit before students arrived at West End Elementary School, at 4483 N.C. Highway 211. Faculty and first responders routed parents and school buses to the back of the school for drop-offs to keep students from seeing the body.

Relatives said McGregor was walking to work at a local McDonald's at the time of the crash.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol released photos of the SUV involved in the hit-and-run in hopes of finding someone who may have additional information.

Moore County Schools officials sent counselors to West End Elementary to provide any needed support to students and faculty.

No suspects had been identified.
