GARNER, N.C. — A 60-year-old man was killed early Monday while trying to cross U.S. Highway 401 in Garner, prompting officials to shut down several lanes of the busy thoroughfare during the morning rush hour commute while they investigated the crash, authorities said.

Garner police closed several northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, also known as Fayetteville Road, after the incident, which occurred about 5:15 a.m. near Mechanical Boulevard. Police reopened the lanes at 8:30 a.m.

Police identified the victim as Parker Robert Stancil.

Investigators identified the driver of the 2017 Buick Encore that struck Stancil as Cheryl Tilley, 64, of Raleigh. Police said she remained at the scene until law enforcement officers arrived, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear if the man was in a cross walk when the accident occurred.
