PINEHURST, N.C. — A 17-year-old from Southern Pines died early Thursday after being hit by a car in the 1900 block of U.S. Highway 15-501 near Pinehurst, state Highway Patrol officials said.

According to investigators, Timothy Jeremiah Reeder and a 15-year-old were walking in the roadway about 5 a.m. when Reeder was hit by a 2009 Nissan Altima.

William Gardner Mullen, 42, of Southern Pines, was the driver of the car. He was traveling northbound on U.S. 15-501 when he saw the teens and swerved, authorities said. Mullen was unable to avoid hitting Reeder.

Speed and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, and troopers said they do not anticipate filing charges against Mullen.
