<b>RALEIGH, N.C.</b> — A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle, Raleigh police said Friday.

Alvis Gerald Wells Jr., 56, of Raleigh, ran across Falls of Neuse Road between Ronald Drive and Old Wake Forest Road shortly after 8 p.m. into the path of a northbound car driven by Mitchell Lance Manson, according to a Raleigh police report.

Wells wasn't in a crosswalk, and the area wasn't lit by streetlights, the report states.

Last year is projected to have been the deadliest for pedestrians in the United States since the 1990s, according to a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, a nonprofit representing highway safety offices across the country.
