SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A man walking home Saturday night was seriously hurt after being hit by two vehicles in Smithfield, authorities said.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was walking along Outlet Center Drive, near Interstate 95, when he stepped into the path of small car and was knocked into the air, authorities said. He landed in the southbound lane and was then run over by a second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle didn't stop.

The man was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment.

Smithfield police said the man was at fault in the initial incident, so the driver of the first car won't face charges.

The State Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
