RALEIGH, N.C. — The ramp from Peace Street to northbound Capital Boulevard closed overnight for the start of a 90-day project that will upgrade Capital Boulevard.

Work was expected to start at 6 a.m. Tuesday, but rain delayed the project by about 36 hours, according to Steve Abbott with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

"We got word a little while ago that rain overnight -- it does not take much -- will prevent the closure," Abbott told WRAL News.

Instead, the work began Wednesday at midnight.

During construction, drivers will be detoured away from the Peace Street interchange for about 90 days while the old structure is demolished and the new ramp is constructed, the NCDOT announced Monday.

Detours will be posted, and drivers will be required to find alternate routes.

Drivers on Peace Street will be directed to Person Street and Wake Forest Road and then onto Automotive Way to access Capital Boulevard headed north.

The easiest alternative from drivers coming from downtown Raleigh is to take McDowell Street north, which turns into Capital Boulevard.

Drivers should allow extra time to navigate the detour.
