Pastor of Goldsboro church tests for COVID-19, services return to online

Since then, church leaders decided to hold worship gatherings online, but now they’re conflicted on what to do next.

“We’re gathering information to determine a safe approach to come together, but a decision will be made later this week whether we’ll be live or online,” said Pastor Steve Holder of the church.

As of now, officials with the Wayne County Health Department said they are looking into several cases that may be connected to Bethel Church. Weeks believes the cases involve his wife and one of their children.

“Anytime we see any kind of trend in a facility ... when we see two cases or more, that’s when we step in and show them steps they should take to limit that spread,” said Joel Gillie, Public Information Officer for Wayne County.

As of Friday, there had been no new positive cases of COVID-19 in connection with Bethel Church. The three church members who tested positive were recovering.

All staff have been tested, and they’ve also deep cleaned the church.

“It’s just a little too soon because results are still coming in so as soon as we have those results, we can make a better decision,” Holder said.

Holder also said if they decide to hold worship gatherings in person again, they will encourage everyone to wear a face covering and keep at a safe distance.
