PARKTON, N.C. — A Parkton volunteer firefighter died of an apparent heart attack after collapsing while on duty Saturday night.

James Walters Sr., 57, and another firefighter were doing paperwork when he collapsed, said Fred Bodenheimer, vice chair of the board of directors for the Parkton Volunteer Fire Department.

CPR and a defibrillator were used on Walters at the station, and an EMS crew took him to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, said Bodenheimer. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Walters was a training officer. His wife, Jackie, also works for the department.
