BLADEN COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities on Saturday found the body of a Fayetteville man who went missing last weekend during a church camping trip to Singletary Lake State Park, according to park officials.
Jesse Sgro, 23, disappeared from his church's camp group early Saturday morning at the Bladen County park. About 75 people from 15 state organizations searched the park and the lake for days, eventually switching the search to a recovery effort.

A park ranger said Sgro's body was found in the middle of the lake, several hundred yards from a nearby pier, in 12 to 14 feet of water. The ranger said it appeared Sgro had been struggling to swim.

Katie Hall, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, said a group of people went out on the lake to canoe that Friday around sunset when conditions were windy. Some of them stayed on the water until after the sun went down, Hall said.

Sgro's canoe was found across the lake from his campsite the next morning. His life jacket and cell phone were still in the boat.

Rescue crews used helicopters, police K-9 officers and drones during the week-long search.
