Parents want tire mulch removed at East Durham Park
Some parents in a Durham neighborhood are concerned about the tire mulch that covers the surface at the East Durham Park. They say it is a carcinogen.
Posted — UpdatedOfficials with the City of Durham say they have tested the tire mulch that covers the ground and say it shows no certain risks, but Kristin Henry and Chloe Palenchar are two of the parents that believe it can cause cancer.
"We're talking about children. I don't want my children to grow up and have some cancer or other kind of health risk," said Henry.
In next year's budget, the city is expected to allocate about $20,000 to replace the loose mulch, but not the bonded mulch that's beneath the surface.
Parents said they originally believed both would be replaced and are now surprised.
"Part of the concern that we have is that we asked for something and thought the conversation was clear on what we were getting and then without any feedback or conversation, the result was changed," said Palenchar.
Officials say the cost differential is about $100,000.
"It's a huge risk that they're putting the children in our neighborhood in," said Palenchar.
The parents said the council has been receptive to their concerns, but officials did not return WRAL's calls for comment.
