Parents running out of options to keep children entertained

With schools shut down and summer hitting its peak, parents at home have their hands full balancing jobs and keeping children entertained.

It’s no doubt it’s been a stressful last few months, for both adults and children.

“Yeah staying in the house is hard but you have to think it’s for your own good,” said 11-year-old Ella Graber.

Graber and her sister have been spending a lot of time at Lake Johnson lately. Their nanny says it’s been challenging finding activities that keep up with the CDC's guidelines.

“We have a lot of bored time in the house but that’s when we try to explore new things," said Sarah Wessner, the nanny. "We do a lot of crafts, a lot of walks around the neighborhood and bike rides.”

Steve Fleming, owner of Galaxy Fun Park, is a father of two and feels the frustration. He said he’s been getting many calls lately from parents wondering when he’ll open his doors.

"'When are you opening? When are you going to open?'" Fleming said. "So I do think that everybody is getting restless, to answer your question, of being at home with their kids and being entertained.”

Gov. Roy Cooper said on Wednesday that July 17 is when he’ll take a look at the coronavirus numbers to make a determination about entering phase three of the reopening plan. If those numbers are where we need to be, then he can start easing restrictions for places like gyms, museums and public playgrounds.

“I really miss all of my friends and the social interaction, but it’s nice too, to have some alone time and regenerate,” Graber said.
