BURGAW, N.C. — Parents and the Pender County NAACP are calling for the firing of a school teacher and the resignation of Superintendent Steven Hill. The public is concerned that the teacher possibly said a racial slur.

Last week, the school system announced the hiring of an outside law firm to independently investigate if the teacher did use "inappropriate racial comments." The board has also asked the federal Office for Civil Rights to assist.

People are frustrated that Hill is not responding quick enough to the incident. Protesters during the school board meeting said an email in a Facebook post revealed that Hill knew about the incident in October of last year.

Twelve speakers voiced their frustration in a school board meeting on Tuesday night. Board Chairman Don Hall said everything will be handled appropriately after the investigation.

“We operate off of facts, not Facebook," Chairman Don Hall said. "So once our investigation is done, if there is action that needs to be taken, there will be the appropriate action. If not, there won’t.”

Hall told WECT News he rejects any teacher who would use a racial slur and asked parents to let him know if people are using racial slurs.
