KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — Parents and leaders in eastern Wake County say they've been quiet too long about their schools not getting the attention and resources that other parts of the county receive.

They met Thursday at Knightdale Town Hall to discuss why poverty and suspension rates are higher in eastern Wake County schools, while test scores are lower.

Toshiba Rice helped organize Thursday's meeting.

"(There's a) a cry coming out of the east to rise up and say, 'I count' and 'I matter' and 'We want change in this area,'" Rice said.

School leaders, however, say they've recently added accelerated courses and a math and science focus to several schools in eastern Wake County.

They added that 14 out of 17 schools in the area are adequate or high-achieving.
