Parasite found in McDonald's salad infects over 400 people

The cyclospora parasite that found its way into McDonald's customers' salads back in July has now infected a total of 436 people, according to a report from Business Insider.

The cyclospora parasite that found its way into McDonald's customers' salads back in July has now infected a total of 436 people, according to a report from Business Insider.
Salads were pulled from 3,000 different stores as a result of the parasite scare and 20 consumers were so sick they had to be hospitalized, according to reporting by Business Insider.
Business Insider reported since August 2, the FDA has logged 41 additional infections and four hospitalizations to add to the current total.
Symptoms of the parasite appear after one week, according the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Cyclosporiasis, the disease caused from the parasite, may cause diarrhea, weight loss, cramping, nausea and loss of appetite.
This parasite may have also spread to meats sold in restaurants like Trader Joes, Walgreens and Kroger from July 18 to July 23, according to Business Insider and the United States Department of Agriculture.
Infections were reported in these 15 different states by the FDA:

  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Ohio
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Wisconsin
